After an underwhelming start to the season, Tottenham Hotspur are hitting their stride just at the right moment. Fresh off their fifth successive win in all competitions, Spurs travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton on Sunday.
After a rocky start to the season, where they managed just 4 points from their first four games, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs seem to be finding their rhythm. Since their North London Derby defeat, the Lilywhites have won each and every game. But the challenge they face against Brighton is anything but straightforward. Like Spurs, the Seagulls have kicked off their 2024/25 campaign in impressive form. Under the guidance of their new coach, Florian Hurzeler, Brighton have caught opponents off guard with a fresh and unconventional style of play.
The Seagulls have already notched up big wins against Manchester United and Everton, as well as a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Arsenal. Brighton have proven they're not a side to be underestimated, and Sunday's clash between these two teams promises to be one to remember. Buckle up, football fans—this could be an instant classic.
The Ange Postecoglou era has shown plenty of promise so far. In his debut season, the Australian coach completely revitalized the atmosphere at Spurs with his exciting, all-out attacking style of football. Not only did he shift the mood, but he also improved results, leading Tottenham to a respectable 5th-place finish in the Premier League. However, the start of the 2024/25 campaign was anything but smooth. After a bruising North London Derby defeat, critics were quick to call Postecoglou a "one-trick pony." The negativity could have hit a boiling point if they had crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Coventry City.
But in true dramatic fashion, Spurs clawed their way back with late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson, snatching a last-gasp win and avoiding a cup upset. Since that pivotal moment, Tottenham have been on fire. Dominating Brentford and Manchester United in the Premier League, while steamrolling through Qarabag and Ferencvaros in the Europa League. During this five-game stretch, the Lilywhites have scored 13 goals. With this red-hot form, Tottenham will head into their clash against Brighton full of confidence, ready to chase another positive result.
Having said that, Brighton will make life difficult for Ange Postecoglou’s men. The Seagulls started the season in scintillating form, securing victories against Everton and Manchester United. However, since that exceptional start, they have witnessed a downturn in form. Now, Florian Hurzeler’s men are winless in their last four Premier League games. Disappointing draws against Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forrest was followed by a humiliating 4-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge. The Seagulls’ defense was so porous that Chelsea craved through them with ease. In fact, Cole Palmer became the first player in Prem history to score four goals in the first half. Brighton must return to winning ways, and a win over Tottenham at the Amex Stadium could be just what they need to get their season back on track. They’ve already shown they know how to get the better of Spurs, having pulled off a commanding 4-2 victory over them at the Amex last season.
Brighton boss Florian Hurzeler shared a mixed bag of injury news ahead of Sunday’s clash. James Milner (thigh), Brajan Gruda (unspecified), Joel Veltman (illness), and Solly March (knee) are all possibilities for a return, adding some much-needed depth. However, Joao Pedro (ankle), Matt O'Riley (ankle), and Jan Paul van Hecke (unspecified) are still sidelined, and Simon Adingra remains a doubt. Last weekend, alongside Cole Palmer's standout showing for Chelsea, 20-year-old Carlos Baleba made waves for Brighton. The Cameroonian midfielder became the youngest from his nation to both score and assist in a Premier League match. He’s set to run the midfield again with fellow young talent Jack Hinshelwood.
On the Tottenham front, Son Heung-min and left-back Destiny Udogie were both rested midweek due to recent knocks. While Udogie is expected to be fit for the game, Son’s availability remains in doubt. Spurs fans, impressed by the promising 17-year-old Mikey Moore's midweek performance, are hoping Postecoglou gives him the nod over the misfiring Timo Werner, though that may be wishful thinking. Tottenham will also be without Wilson Odobert and Richarlison, who remain on the injury list. Dominic Solanke, fresh off his first England call-up in seven years, will lead the Spurs attack. Radu Dragusin is back after his Europa League suspension, but with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven forming a rock-solid partnership at the back, Dragusin may have to wait for his chance.
Tottenham’s Possible Starting XI: Vicario; Pedro Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Maddison, Kulusevski; Werner, Solanke, Johnson.
Brighton’s Possible Starting XI: Verbruggen; Veltman, Dunk, Igor, Estupinan; Baleba, Hinshelwood, Wieffer; Mitoma, Welbeck, Rutter.
Tottenham Hotspur: W, L, L, W, W
Brighton and Hove Albion: W, D, D, D, L
The game is scheduled to take place on 6th October 2024 (Sunday) at Amex Stadium in Brighton. The match will kick off at 9:00 PM (Indian Standard Time).
