Barcelona have enjoyed a stellar start to the 2024/25 season, winning all five of their La Liga games this season. However, their most recent win against Girona came at a cost. Summer signing Dani Olmo was forced off the field due to a hamstring injury, and the club has since confirmed the extent of the issue.
Barcelona secured a thumping 4-1 win over Girona on Sunday thanks to goals from Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Pedri. However, the joyous Barcelona fans soon were looking with concern when the 26-year-old midfielder was forced off the field in the 61st minute. After the game, Hansi Flick’s post-match remarks about Olmo’s injury didn’t alleviate concerns. The German head coach said, “We have to wait and see tomorrow, our doctor takes care of him and we will see. We are not sure. Hopefully it’s not heavy, but I can’t say anything else.”
However, Barcelona have now revealed the severity of Dani Olmo’s hamstring injury. “Tests conducted this Monday morning on Dani Olmo have revealed that the FC Barcelona forward has injured his right hamstring. He is expected to be unavailable for the next four to five weeks,” as stated in an official club statement. This is a massive blow for Hansi Flick and Barcelona, who are already missing several key players. Dani Olmo enjoyed a blistering start to life in Barcelona, as he has scored three goals in as many games. Now, Olmo is set to miss La Liga matches against Villarreal, Getafe, Osasuna, Alavés, and Sevilla, and could even be a doubt for the highly anticipated Clasico on Sunday, 27th October. To make matters worse, Hansi Flick will also be without Olmo for crucial Champions League ties against Monaco, Young Boys, and possibly even a showdown with Bayern Munich.
Furthermore, injuries are starting to pile up for Barcelona. Hansi Flick will be without the services of Frenkie De Jong (ankle), Marc Bernal (knee), Fermin Lopez (hamstring), Andreas Christensen (achilles), and Ronald Araujo (hamstring). While Gavi has returned to training after almost a year on the sidelines due to an ACL injury, the 19-year-old is still a long way away from achieving match fitness. So far, Flick has done an impressive job navigating the early season despite these key absences. However, with the games coming thick and fast now, Barcelona’s already thin squad is about to be stretched to its breaking point. This could very well be the ultimate test of Flick’s managerial skills. Can he keep the momentum going while dealing with a squad that’s practically held together with duct tape?
