The 2024/25 Serie A season is turning into an absolute thriller, with just two points separating the top six clubs. It’s a title race brimming with unpredictability, and now, with the international break out of the way until March, the fight for the Scudetto is about to hit full throttle.
This Saturday, the stakes couldn’t be higher as two Italian giants collide in a clash that could shape their seasons. AC Milan take on Juventus in a heavyweight showdown that promises drama, intensity, and no shortage of fireworks. Buckle up, Serie A fans—this is one you won’t want to miss.
After a couple of lackluster seasons, Juventus shook things up by bringing in Thiago Motta as their new manager—and so far, the 42-year-old has delivered. Sitting sixth in the Serie A standings, Juve may not be topping the table, but they’re just two points behind leaders Napoli and remain the only unbeaten team in the league. Motta’s impact has been most visible in their rock-solid defense. Even with the devastating loss of Gleison Bremer to a season-ending knee injury, the Bianconeri boast the league’s best defensive record, conceding just seven goals in 12 matches. But their resilience will face a stern challenge this Saturday at the San Siro, where they go head-to-head with AC Milan in a high-stakes clash.
For the Rossoneri, however, the lead-up to this match has been anything but ideal. Milan’s form has dipped, with just seven points from their last five games. This slump has seen them fall behind in the gripping Scudetto race, currently sitting eight points off the pace set by Napoli—though they do have a game in hand. Worryingly for Milan fans, their team has failed to turn up for the big games. A hard-fought 2-1 win over Inter is their only victory against clubs above them in the standings. Otherwise, it’s been tough going: defeats to Napoli and Fiorentina, and a 2-2 draw with Lazio. Therefore, for Milan, this isn’t just a game—it’s a chance to make a statement. For Juventus, it’s a test of their unbeaten mettle under Motta. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and with the San Siro as the stage, sparks are guaranteed to fly.
AC Milan’s season under new manager Paulo Fonseca has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, and their thrilling 3-3 draw with Cagliari perfectly summed it up. Things started on the wrong foot when the Rossoneri conceded just two minutes into the game. But then came a flurry of goals—two from Rafael Leão and one from Tammy Abraham—that had Milan fans believing the three points were in the bag. However, in the dying moments of the match, Gabriele Zappa struck an 89th-minute equalizer, earning 16th-placed Cagliari a hard-fought point and leaving Milan ruing their defensive frailties. It’s been the story of their season—plenty of firepower in attack but far too shaky at the back.
This inconsistency has left the Rossoneri on the outskirts of a gripping Serie A title race. With 18 points from 11 games, Milan currently sit six points behind league leaders Napoli, though they do have a game in hand. While the gap isn’t insurmountable, Fonseca and his squad will need to tighten up defensively if they’re to mount a serious challenge for the Scudetto.
On the flip side, Juventus have started the season in promising fashion under new head coach Thiago Motta. In spite of injuries to some key players, the Bianconeri are the only unbeaten team left in Serie A. Having won six and drawn six games, Juve are just two points shy of Napoli. If results go their way, the Bianconeri could end Matchday 13 as the league leaders. However, securing a win at the San Siro will be a daunting task. They head into this crunch game on the back of a professional 2-0 win over Turin rivals, Torino. Goals from teenage sensation Kenan Yildiz and Timothy Weah maintain Juve’s dominance over their city rivals. Juve fans can further solace from the fact that, their beloved team has kept clean sheets in four of their five away trips. However, Juve did concede four at the San Siro when they faced Inter Milan a couple of weeks ago. So, can Juventus maintain their unbeaten start to the season, or will the Rossoneri overcome their great rivals?
Juventus face a tough challenge without their leading marksman, Dusan Vlahovic, who’s sidelined with a thigh injury. Back-up striker Arkadiusz Milik won’t be back until next year either, leaving Juve to get creative up front. The versatile Timothy Weah—son of Milan legend George Weah—or young talent Kenan Yildiz could slot in as a false nine, supported by Francisco Conceição and Teun Koopmeiners.
If Yildiz finds the net on Saturday, he’ll hit a remarkable milestone: becoming the seventh-youngest player to score six Serie A goals for Juventus at just 19 years and 203 days, overtaking none other than Alessandro Del Piero. In midfield, Manuel Locatelli, recently recalled to the Italian national team, is set to start. Locatelli is part of a unique club—players who’ve scored for both Juventus and Milan in this fixture. However, Juve may have to cope without Douglas Luiz, who could join a growing injury list that already includes Vlahovic, Milik, Bremer, Nico González, and Juan Cabal.
On the Milan side, options in attack are more plentiful. Former Juve striker Álvaro Morata is back in action after representing Spain in the UEFA Nations League. His 16-year-old understudy, Francesco Camarda, recently dazzled with a brace for Italy's U-19s after starting against Cagliari. Tammy Abraham is also fit, though Luka Jović remains a doubt with a groin issue and joins Alessandro Florenzi and Ismaël Bennacer on Milan’s injury list.
One player to watch is Rafael Leão, who seems to have rediscovered his mojo after a brief dip in form. The Portuguese dribbling maestro leads Serie A in successful take-ons for 2024 and is just one goal shy of hitting double figures for a third consecutive calendar year. With Leão in full flow, Milan will hope to turn their attacking potential into a statement win.
The game is scheduled to take place on 23rd November 2024 (Saturday) at San Siro in Milan. The match will kick off at 10:30 PM (Indian Standard Time).
