Lord’s Set to Host the ICC World Test Championship Final in 2025

Cricket’s governing body ICC has announced that the prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground in London will host the ICC World Test Championship final from 11th June to 15th June.

It will be the first time that Lord’s, often referred to as “Home of Cricket,” will host the World Test Championship final 2024. Lord’s is one of cricket’s most iconic venues, with a storied history that dates back to the early 19th century. Known for hosting some of the sport's most memorable matches, including multiple ICC Cricket World Cup finals, Lord's embodies the tradition and charm of Test cricket. With the World Test Championship final now set to take place here, it’s yet another prestigious addition to the ground’s already illustrious legacy. 

The previous two finals took place at Southampton’s Ageas Bowl in 2021 and The Oval in 2023, where both matches saw the crowning of new champions. New Zealand claimed the inaugural title in 2021, while two years later Australia took home the trophy. On both occasions, India were the runner-up, falling short in the decisive matches. This time, Lord’s will set the stage for another thrilling chapter in Test cricket’s most prestigious competition.  

The WTC Final 2025 will take place over five days, from 11th June to 15th June, with 16th June designated as the reserve day in case weather plays spoilsport. The teams that will compete in the 2025 WTC final are still up in the air as the World Test Championship cycle is ongoing. Right now, India is sitting pretty at the top of the WTC table with a PCT (Points Percentage System) of 68.52. In their nine Test matches this cycle, India has secured six wins, two draws, and just one loss. Hot on their heels are Australia, who have won eight Tests, drawn three, and lost one, giving them a PCT score of 62.50, putting them in second place. 

It’s looking likely that India and Australia will be the two teams making their way to the finals at Lord’s. However, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and England are in the chasing pack and aren’t too far behind Australia's PCT score. With a year left in the WTC cycle, any of these three teams could leapfrog Australia if the Aussies stumble. 

Given the fierce competition and growing anticipation, ICC believes the WTC final at Lord’s will be one of the most significant cricketing events in recent years. ICC CEO Geoff Allardice shared his excitement, saying, “The ICC World Test Championship final is the pinnacle of Test cricket, and we are thrilled to bring this event to Lord’s for the first time. The history and tradition of Lord’s make it the perfect venue for what promises to be an unforgettable match.” With everything set, cricket fans around the world are eagerly waiting to see which teams will take to the iconic Lord’s Ground to fight for the 3rd WTC title.
