Jay Shah on the Verge of Becoming the ICC Chairman, Set to Replace Greg Barclay

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is expected to be appointed as the new ICC Chairman, with the current Chairman, Greg Barclay, planning to step down when his term concludes in November 2024.

As the nation with most cricket fans, India has consolidated its hold on power in World Cricket. A key player in India’s rise to power in cricket has been Jay Shah. The 35-year-old was elected as the BCCI Secretary in October 2019 and was re-elected for the same position in 2022. During his tenure, the BCCI strengthened its grip on power, by becoming the strongest board in World Cricket. As a result, Jay Shah became one of the most powerful men in cricket.

The only natural progression from his role as the BCCI Secretary was a role in ICC. And Shah further enhanced his candidature when India clinched its second T20 World Cup in West Indies earlier this year. Soon after India’s T20 triumph, rumours started to swirl that Jay Shah could become the next ICC Chairman. The incumbent Chairman, Greg Barclay, announced his intention to step down from the position during a video conference. It’s rumoured that Barclay will step down because ICC are in the midst of a 4.46-billion-dollar dispute with major broadcast rights holder, Star.

In an interview with The Age, an ICC spokesperson revealed Barclay’s future intentions. He said, “ICC chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022.”

According to some reports, Jay Shah has acquired support from ECB (English Cricket Board) and ACB (Australian Cricket Board). Furthermore, He plans to serve as the ICC Chairman for at least three years. If the reports are to be believed, then Jay Shah will become just the third Indian to become the ICC Chairman, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012). Shah’s current tenure as the BCCI Secretary ends in 2025 after which he will have to enter a three-year cooling off period. Therefore, becoming the ICC Chairman seems to be a plausible career trajectory for Jay Shah.
