Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowling first, the only other time under Virat Kohli's captaincy that India chose to field first in a home Test was at Bengaluru (against South Africa) 2015.

At 24 Test matches played at Kanpur, this is just the second time a side has chosen to field first; the first was against England in 1964. Rohit made two intriguing decisions to bowl first and to keep the same eleven players. Since batting will be complicated and the surface appears moist, you can appreciate the choice to bowl first. Nonetheless, it's fascinating to watch India play three seamers. Thus, Kuldeep's window for a home test will be extended.

Day 1: After a comprehensive win by 280 runs in the 1st Test match in Chennai, Team India face Bangladesh again in the 2nd test match at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur with an unchanged squad. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. Despite a poor showing in their first Test, Bangladesh stuck with their opening duo of Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan for the second innings. This time, the pair showed more resilience against the Indian attack. While Islam was quick to get off the mark, Zakir struggled to handle the relentless pace of India's bowlers.

Jasprit Bumrah, in particular, was on fire. The Indian spearhead bowled four maiden overs in his first nine, showcasing his precision and control. However, despite his early brilliance, Bumrah couldn't secure the breakthrough. Islam and Hasan managed to put together a gritty 26-run opening stand, though Zakir was still struggling to get off the mark. It was India's debutant Akash Deep who finally broke the deadlock. Zakir, after battling through 24 balls without scoring, was dismissed for a duck, providing India with a key breakthrough. Following Hasan’s departure, Mominul Haque was sent in at No. 3 instead of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. The move to send Haque up the order seemed to have worked. But before that, Akash Deep struck again, sending well-set Shadman Islam back to the pavilion with just 29 runs on the scoreboard.

At this stage, it was looking like the Indian pace attack would once again topple the Bangladeshi top-order. However, Najmul Shanto and Haque had other ideas. The duo frustrated Indian bowlers, as they smashed boundaries at will, while also rotating the strike. Shanto and Haque built a 51-run partnership for the third wicket. However, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Shanto, who was on 31, with an absolute gem of a delivery. The crafty spinner deceived the Bangladeshi captain with a well-disguised arm ball that Shanto failed to pick. The ball struck him plumb on the pads, right in front of the stumps, sending him back to the pavilion.

Following the skipper's dismissal, Mushfiqur Rahim stepped in to bat, but his time at the crease was cut short as rain interrupted play. Only nine overs were bowled in the second session before the weather completely washed out the remainder of Day 1 of the 2nd Test. By stumps, Mominul Haque had settled in with an unbeaten 40, while Mushfiqur managed 6 runs. Bangladesh wrapped up a rain-affected day at 107 for 3.

Day 4:  After rain washed away two whole days of Test cricket, Bangladeshi batters Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim strode onto the pitch to play out the remaining two days. However, it was Jasprit Bumrah who gave India a quick start, as he dismissed Rahim in the 41st over. Time was of the essence for Team India because they just have two days to secure another victory over Bangladesh. That eagerness to win soon translated to their bowling, as Indian bowlers decimated the Bangladeshi batting order. While Ravindra Jadeja was the only Indian bowler to pick up just one wicket, it was the highlight of India’s 1st innings. This was Jadeja’s 300th wicket in Test cricket. With only 233 runs on the scoreboard, Bangladesh’s first innings came to an end. If it wasn’t for Mominul Haque’s fighting century, the Bangla Tigers would have been in deep trouble. But with 233 runs on the board, Bangladesh still had a fighting chance. 

However, that belief soon evaporated once Indian openers made a blistering start. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal broke the record for fastest team 50, achieving that milestone before the end of the third over. Soon, India broke another record, as they scored 100 runs in the 11th over. At this point, India were well on course to take the lead before Tea. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed Rohit Sharma for 23 runs in the 4th over. Despite Hitman’s dismissal, Jaiswal and Shubman Gill continued to score runs at a blistering pace. In fact, Jaiswal brought up his half century in just 31 balls. It looked like the 22-year-old batsman will get his century in no time, but Hasan Mahmud castled Jaiswal in the 15th over.  

Soon after Jaiswal’s departure, Shakib Al Hasan sent Gill to the pavilion too. Promoted to No.4, Rishabh Pant came out to chase Bangladesh’s total in record time. But he was also dismissed by Shakib for a measly score of 9 runs. Following Gill and Pant’s departure, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul stabilized the Indian innings. They put up an 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket. During his knock, King Kohli broke the 27,000-international run barrier, becoming the fastest cricketer to this milestone. Eventually, Kohli was dismissed by Shakib on 47 runs, but the damage had already been done. While wickets fell on a regular basis after Kohli’s departure, KL Rahul brought up a fighting half-century, which handed India the lead. After the fall of the 9th wicket, Rohit Sharma decided to declare the second innings, with India leading by 52 runs. 

With India hell-bent on securing a win, Bangladeshi batters are up against the wall. They must somehow bat for as long as physically possible. However, Ravichandran Ashwin got the breakthrough, as he dismissed Zakir Hasan with the first ball of the 8th over. He soon sent ‘Night Watchman’ Hasan Mahmud to the pavilion too in his very next over. With just 26 runs on the board, Bangladesh have already lost two wickets and trail India by 26 runs at the end of the 4th day. Currently, Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque will come out to bat on the fifth day of the 2nd test. 

Day 5: After a chastening Day 4, Bangladeshi batsmen Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque came out to rescue Bangladesh on Day 5. Despite losing two days of play due to rain, India were on the verge of a series whitewash. Now, it was upon Bangladesh’s batsmen to hold down the fort and secure a draw. However, the Bangladeshi batting order toppled like house of cards. 1st innings centurion Mominul Haque was the first victim of the day, as Ravi Ashwin dismissed him for a measly 2 runs.  

Skipper Najmul Shanto and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim put up a brief fight with a solid 55-run stand, but Ravindra Jadeja soon broke through by dismissing the captain. After that, the Bangladeshi batting lineup crumbled, with little resistance to offer. Jasprit Bumrah, Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin each grabbed three wickets, while Akash Deep chipped in with one. Bangladesh were bundled out for just 146, leaving India with a straightforward target of 95 runs to seal a series whitewash. Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, strode out with confidence to finally secure a crucial win over Bangladesh. 

However, with just 18 runs on the scoreboard, India lost their first wicket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz sent Rohit Sharma to the pavilion in just the third over of the game. Soon after Sharma’s dismissal, Taijul Islam castled Shubman Gill too. With just 34 runs on the board, India had lost two key wickets. But despite Rohit Sharma’s and Shubman Gill’s wicket, the Indian batsmen motored towards the target, and youngster Jaiswal played a crucial role. After his impressive knock in the first innings, Jaiswal scored his second half-century of the match. Eventually, the 22-year-old batsman was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan, but the damage had already been done.  

When Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed, India needed just 3 runs to secure an impressive victory. Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli took care of that, as the ‘Men in Blue’ coasted to a series whitewash of Bangladesh. Yashasvi Jaiswal was adjourned as the Man of the Match, while Ravichandran Ashwin received the Player of the Series award for a record 11th time. Up next for Team India is a T20 match against Bangladesh on Sunday at the Gwalior International Cricket Stadium.
