Day 1: India’s long-awaited return to Test cricket is finally underway. Team India go head-to-head against a Bangladesh side, who are riding high after a series win against Pakistan in Pakistan. Meanwhile, India head into the match with a full-strength squad, consisting of the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Having said that, Bangladesh soon held an advantageous position, as they won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Early on, Najmal Hossain Shanto’s decision to bowl first was vindicated, as Hasan Mahmud fiery opening spell skittled India’s top order. Mahmud first scalp was the wicket of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the sixth over. After dismissing the ‘Hitman,’ Mahmud took two crucial wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in quick succession. At this point, India were reeling, already down three wickets with just 34 runs on the scoreboard. Amid the carnage, young Yashasvi Jaiswal stood firm, holding the innings together as wickets tumbled around him. Jaiswal, along with Rishabh Pant, steadied the ship with a vital 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket, calming some nerves after the early collapse.

However, as the second session began, Pant was dismissed on 39 runs by Mahmud. This was the 24-year-old pacer’s fourth wicket of the day. It is safe to suggest that the Indian top order had no answer for Mahmud’s exceptional bowling. With wickets falling around him, Yashasvi Jaiswal remained calm and soon he brought up his fifth test half-century in 95 balls. However, Jaiswal couldn’t convert his half-century into a century, as Nahid Rana made the all-important breakthrough for Bangladesh. In the very next over, Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed KL Rahul. With just 144 runs on the board, India were already down six wickets.

For all intent and purpose, i it seemed Bangladesh were set to wrap up the Indian innings for under 250 runs. However, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja had other ideas. Despite all the odds stacked against them, the duo resurrected India’s floundering innings. Ashwin scored India’s first century of the test season, while Jadeja is currently on 86 runs. At stumps, the two batsmen have put up a 195-run sixth wicket partnership, which has taken India’s total to a respectable 339 for six wickets.
