Sacramento Kings Fire Head Coach Mike Brown Halfway Through the Season

The Sacramento Kings have decided to sack head coach Mike Brown after the Kings suffered their fifth straight loss against the Detroit Pistons. Sacramento have lost 12 of its last 17 games. At 13–18, the Kings are last in the Pacific Division and ranked 12th in the Western Conference.

Reports suggest that assistant coach Doug Christie will step in to lead the Kings for now, as the team gears up for a road game against the Lakers. The decision to part ways with Mike Brown came just hours after a gut-wrenching one-point loss to the Pistons, where the Kings fumbled a three-point lead in the dying seconds. The game’s heartbreaking twist? De’Aaron Fox’s lapse in judgment, gifting Detroit a four-point play with just three seconds left. According to ABC10's Matt George, the timing of Brown’s firing has raised more than a few eyebrows—he was let go shortly after running practice and addressing the media, just before the team boarded their flight to Los Angeles for Saturday night’s showdown with the Lakers.

Mike Brown was named Coach of the Year in 2023—his second time winning the award—after engineering a stunning turnaround, taking Sacramento from a 30-win season to a 48–34 record and a Pacific Division title. His success earned him a three-year extension in June, keeping him with the team through the 2026-27 season. But the road to that extension wasn’t exactly smooth. Before signing the deal, Brown and the Kings clashed over the annual salary, sparking speculation that he might simply see out his contract and move on. In the end, though, the agreement put him among the league’s highest-paid coaches, with a hefty $8.5 million per year. Brown’s tenure in Sacramento closed with a solid 107–88 record and a first-round playoff series under his belt.
